Encaustic on wood
Fussy. Quiet. Cautious. Overthinker. For a long time, the way well-intended caregivers described my daughter caused me to question whether there was something wrong with her or my parenting.
I now know that 20% of children are considered highly sensitive. This means they have increased sensitivity around stimuli and process more information, more thoroughly. It also means their central nervous systems are more reactive. They can be easily startled and overwhelmed, slow to warm up in new situations, and prone to perfectionism and anxiety.
Being an HSC is also connected to what I thought were quirks...I've had to cut her tags out of her clothes since she was a baby, she's very sensitive to fabrics and food texture and interestingly, there are correlations to overactive allergies.
HSC are also gifts. They are highly intuitive, empathetic, curious, intelligent, funny, and learn better from gentle correction. They do really well in science, art, engineering, and academic careers. They think and feel and care very deeply.
She is not inherently afraid or shy, I do not need to force her to change her behavior, she is simply seeing the world differently and taking in more information and thus needs her own time to process, prepare, and adjust. Having the basic language and understanding about her unique needs has unlocked so much for me, and led me to the revolution that I am also an HSP.
If you're a parent and you're struggling and think you may have a HSC, I strongly recommend psychotherapist, Elaine Aron's book The Highly Sensitive Child.
